Traveling Toes  pg.1  pg.2

I wonder if anyone hasn’t photographed their toes  in a travel photo?  This photo collection puts the spotlight on the view from behind our toes, and in a few instances from behind toes covered by socks or shoes.  Here are some contributions from travel writers, photographers, and bloggers culled from their archives. I wonder who will tantalize us with the most exotic image showing their toes in the pose?

1.  A few months ago I was relaxing at the spectacular pool complex at the Aqua Kauai Beach Resort in Lihue, Kauai, Hawaii.  It is landscaped with lagoons, lava grottoes and waterfalls, and native foliage and has a special sand-bottom pool, lava-tube waterslide, and sand-topped lounge area for kids.

2.  Double Toes in Italy.  Even with all of the photos and reviews available online, you never can know exactly what you're getting until you arrive, and oh were we thrilled with where we "landed"  - Hotel Rivalago in Sulzano, Italy.  This is one place where it is absolutely worth it to book a lakeview room - the vistas are spectacular from dawn til dark.  We can't wait to get out and absorb the beauty, and in minutes we're relaxing by lovely Lake Iseo.”

3.  Even travel writers get to chill out now and then, and this is what I was doing at the lovely beach on Francis Bay, St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands.

4-toes-Puerto Escondido-cMichele Peterson-101kb

4.  This photo was taken in Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca, Mexico and is my view from my favourite writing perch at our home on Mexico's Pacific Coast.  I often see migrating whales, fishing boats returning to shore at night and manta rays leaping into the sky -- it's an ever-evolving view I never tire of.

5-toes-Florida-Fort Lauderdale-cLauren-600pix

5.  The photo shows my toes relaxing alongside the pool in Fort Lauderdale after a flight from Toronto.  It was so nice to go from a snowy winter to the bright, warm sunshine, and I was taking full advantage of it!

6-toes-Playa-Riviera Maya-Mexico-The Royal-hanging in hammock-selfie-c2012 Carole Terwilliger Meyers-iPhone-600pix

6.  There’s nothing quite like hanging in a hammock.  Here at The Royal in the Riviera Maya in Mexico, almost every room has one on its patio or balcony.

14-toes-Cuba-Baracoa-c Claudia Tavani-600pix

14.  Don't ask me why I like taking picture of my toes. I guess it is just because it shows I am so relaxed, and the contrast between my skin, my nail polish and the sand. Here, my toes are in the sand of Baracoa, Cuba

16-toes-U.S.-Boston-c Shraddha Grupta-600pix

16.  This is me touring the historic Boston City in a day!  And there is no better way to start the tour than stepping ahead on The Freedom Trail.  A 2.5 miles long, red brick path passing through downtown Boston, lead me through the 16 most significant historic sites, vital to the true making of America.  From churches to traditional buildings, one can easily see it all in a few hours without even missing the directions as you follow the well laid trail.  Unconventionally loud, with a series of events and performances engaging the tourists on the streets, the walk is travelers paradise – a true introduction to the multicultural vibe of the Boston city.

17-toes-U.S.-Honolulu-c Catherine Sweeney

17.  Gliding along the smooth waters near Waikiki Beach,  in a double-hulled canoe was a highlight of my stay in Honolulu, Hawaii. Ready to paddle away from shore with my 6 crewmates, I was compelled to take this photo to capture the moment. Being at the front of the canoe added to my sense of adventure.

18-toes-U.K.-Holy Island-c Travel Candy

18.  It was Easter Sunday and my toes took me to the seat of Christianity in the UK: Lindisfarne --also known as Holy Island--Northumberland. After a tour around the island's incredible castle, my toes and I sat on a grassy slope overlooking the north sea. In front of us, seals bobbed in the ocean, whilst in the distance the misty shadow of Bamburgh Castle stood proud. It was one of the most sweetly serene moments of my life. Heaven on earth. And I'd walk a thousand miles to experience it all again.

19-toes-Maldives-Uligamu Island-c Behan Gifford

19.  This was taken at Uligamu Island, at the northern tip of the Maldives.  We live on our sailboat and travel full time, after leaving the USA in 2008.  The way we live- on a boat, in the tropics-- shoes are redundant most of the time.  I took this picture to highlight the incredible clarity of the water, as you can see the reef--individual corals, and fish even--in the water next to the boat (it's about 15-20' deep).

20-toes-Egypt-Sharm-el-Sheikh-beach-c Laura+Lance Longwell

20.  After a day scuba diving in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, we hit the beach.  Our relaxation was captured on a camera phone.

21-toes-Fiji-Waya Island-c Behan Gifford

21.  I travel full time with my family, and I'm always looking for a good hike--especially one that leads to a view.  This one involved an all-fours scramble that had mountain goats climbing nearby, literally, but the view from the top to the south end of Waya Island in Fiji made it all worthwhile.  Toes belong to me, my six year old, and my eleven year old.

22-toes-Italy-Tuscany-Certaldo-cAngela Dowin-600pix

22.  This is me relaxing in a park while watching a sunset in Tuscany.  We stayed in the small town of  Certaldo in Italy and enjoyed every moment of it.

23-toes-U.S.-California-Garberville-Avenue of Giants-Benbow Historic Inn-c2015 Carole Terwilliger Meyers

23.  There is nothing quite like relaxing on a lounge chair and listening to a soft wind blow through the tall pines, like I’m doing here at the Benbow Historic Inn in Garberville, California, a stone’s throw from the majestic Avenue of the Giants.

24. toes-Indonesia-Bali-Taman Nusa cultural park-ground offering+toes-c2015 Carole Terwilliger Meyers-600pix

24.  In Bali, it is best not to step on offerings such as this one at Taman Nusa cultural park.  They are placed on the ground to keep away the evil spirit.

25-toes-Cambodia-SiemReap-cYvetteCardozo-133kb_a

25.  This shot was taken in Siem Reap's night market in Cambodia. It's called a Doctor fish 'massage.'  Tiny fish nibble dead skin off a person's feet. It tickles like mad.  $2 US gets you a can of beer and 20 minutes with the fish in a 'foot bath' tank.
