Dunsmuir-Hellman Historic Estate 2960 Peralta Oaks Ct., near 106th St. exit off I-580 east. Fee. Built in 1899, this renovated 37-room neoclassical Revival mansion is furnished with period antiques. It features a Tiffany-style dome and 10 fireplaces, and tours are available. Admission is usually free for visitors to picnic and stroll the 50 acres of grounds. Of special interest are a grotto, a drained but rustically beautiful swimming pool, and a peaceful duck and swan pond. The horror film Burnt Offerings and the James Bond thriller A View to a Kill were both filmed here.
Cultural entertainment is scheduled on Family Sundays. Each December the grounds are transformed into a wonderland for Holidays at Dunsmuir, and the house is decked out in appropriate finery. Other annual special events include a Spring Festival, and a Scot’s Faire in July with Highland games and more.
