SAN FRANCISCO’s BEST ●Attractions●Tours
BY BUS
Magic Bus Departs from Union Square. Recommended for children 7 and older. Reservations advised. Fee. This 90-minute multimedia bus tour transports participants through Chinatown, North Beach, and Haight-Ashbury, while taking them back in time to the Summer of Love. Some say that if you remember the 1960s, you weren’t there. Maybe, maybe not. But if you’d like to refresh your memory, this tour makes it quite painless. And it doesn’t take long to get back in the ’60s groove. After checking in with a hippie chick gatekeeper, the bus starts up, the window shades drop, and the soundtrack starts. It feels like a flashback. For a while, a psychedelic light show with blobs is projected on window shades, and soon you’re looking out the windows to the epicenter of it all — the Haight-Ashbury district and green, green Golden Gate Park--all the while viewing documentaries of the 1967 Summer of Love Human Be-In. My favorite part was when people on the street noticed the bus pass and waved and smiled, sometimes even flashing the peace sign. That took me back. But all too soon, we were getting off the bus, trying to figure out what to do about dinner as our daisies began to wilt.
