Grand Lake Theater
3200 Grand Ave.; Lake Merritt area.  Fee.  Built in 1926 as a silent-movie house that was also used for vaudeville, this first-run Art Deco movie palace features a sweeping staircase, walls papered in red velvet, chandeliers, opera boxes, and even a vintage Wurlitzer pipe organ that rises from beneath the stage before Friday and Saturday evening shows.  Converted into a four-plex, it shows first-run movies and has two 3-D projectors.  It shows no commercials, and real butter tops the popcorn.
