BERKELEY’s BEST ?Restaurants

La Mediterranée 2936 College Ave./Ashby Ave.; Elmwood.  Situated in a low-key neighborhood and on a street filled with unique shops, this spot has a pleasant, protected sidewalk-side patio in addition to an attractive, high-ceilinged interior.  The Middle Eastern menu offers an outstanding cinnamony chicken Cilicia in phyllo dough and a succulent chicken pomegranate, as well as soups and salads for lighter appetites.  I like to come here for the lunch special, which is hidden on the back of the menu, and I usually get the 3 filo choice-- opting for two chicken Cilicias and one spinach-cheese and a cup of tasty lemon-chicken soup.  The lunch special comes with two pieces of pita, some delicious hummus, and an assortment of fresh fruit.

2020 pandemic update:  Unfortunately, the website is not kept up to date.  I called to order two lunch specials at 11 a.m. but was told they weren’t open until noon.  The website clearly says lunch is daily from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.  However, my order was taken and I was told I could pick it up at 11:30.  When I arrived, my order was ready and my experience was excellent.  Take out is picked up inside. The very pleasant young man who assisted us pointed out that sanitizer had been used on all things we were touching.   The meals were packed nicely and presented in a bag with handles, which made for easy carrying to the car.  Prices have gone up a bit, but the food is as good as ever.
