ALBANY’s BEST Restaurants

Kathmandu 1410 Solano Ave./Santa Fe Ave.  Tibetan and Nepalese fare--a cross between Chinese and Indian cuisines--is served in this cozy space that makes you feel like you are a guest in someone’s home.  A good selection of vegetarian items is available (try the delicious specialty curry of 19 varieties of beans cooked with tomato, cilantro, ginger, garlic, and green onions), and various kinds of sprouted beans add a pleasing crunch to many dishes.  Vegetarian thukpa—a traditional Tibetan ginger and garlic noodle soup—is also tasty.   Lamb items are a specialty, and khashi ko chhwela--a spicy smoked-lamb stew served at room temperature--is choice.  Entrees come with condiments, rice, and bread.  Beer and either a cinnamon or banana light yogurt lassi make good accompaniments, and a pot of chai (spiced tea served with milk) makes a nice ending.
