BERKELEY Restaurants

Cha-Am  1543 Shattuck Ave./Cedar St.; Gourmet Ghetto.   Still the leader in the informal ranking of this city’s best Thai restaurants, this gem features a festive atmosphere, an attentive staff, and chefs who produce complex flavors and interesting combinations.  Among the winners on its exciting menu are laap-gai (a chopped chicken salad tossed with fresh mint and coriander), pad-makua-yao (chicken sautéed with basil, chilies, and eggplant), and pad-ped-gung (prawns sautéed with sweet curry sauce, fresh Thai herbs, and green beans).
