BERKELEY’s BEST Restaurants
CLOSED
Au Coquelet  2000 University Ave./Milvia St.; downtown.  This spot is popular with students and night owls and is as Berkeley as you can get.   It is a great spot for a coffee and pastry anytime, since it stays open until 1:30 a.m., and its regulars have been described as “defying description.”  Indeed, it attracts a cross-section.  The cafe menu is simple—omelettes, cold and hot sandwiches, burgers, salads, soups—but the selection of housemade tortes and tarts and coffee drinks is outstanding.
