Chabot Space & Science Center
10000 Skyline Blvd., in Joaquin Miller Park.  Fee.  Begun in 1883 as the Oakland Observatory, this facility was originally located downtown.  It served as the official timekeeping station for the entire Bay Area from 1885 through 1915, measuring time with its transit telescope.  Now it has the largest, most technologically advanced planetarium west of N.Y.C.  Facilities include a domed-screen MegaDome theater, an assortment of hands-on exhibits, and an observatory with three telescopes that is open free on Fridays and Saturday nights from dusk to 10 p.m.
